Last November Cathy and I had the privilege to spend time with Matthew's family in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. We love our grandchildren so much. It does something to our hearts to play, talk and see the world from their perspective. We took our grandson Ben to the park to romp and to play on the slides and swings. He was ecstatic as he ran from one apparatus to another. He would race to the stairs of the slide and climb up to sit down. His eyes would light up and he would countdown before beginning his slide. Every moment was a thrill for Ben. He would tire us out running up and down the hill and from one section of the park to another. It was like he could not get enough of the playground. Finally Ben settled on the swing and was fascinated to have Papaw and Mimi greet him on each end of his swing. His laughter echoed through the park as he loved to go faster and faster. This was the ultimate thrill for him. A few minutes into the swinging Ben recognized the shadow that was following him on the ground. Then like the story of Peter Pan he began to talk to his shadow. He would shout at the top of his voice. . .Go shadow go! In his amazement the shadow stayed with him. Ben was living his dream of swinging high and discovering new things in his world. We were laughing and enjoying every moment with our grandson and taking note of his heart and excitement. At about that time I heard the roar of a C-130 taking off from the nearby airport. I knew there was a chance that our son Matt would be flying this morning. What I didn't know was that his plane would come directly over the park where we were playing with his son. I had been taking pictures of Ben so I turned the camera around and snapped a shot of our son flying his military aircraft for the Air Force. Then it hit me. When our son was real small he had two things in his hands. One was a motorcycle in his left hand. The other was an airplane. Here was our son living his childhood dream. In my mind’s eye I could see our son floating his plane to a landing. This pretend even included sound for the airplane. I know this holiday season is filled with dreams for all of us. We love nothing more than to see dreams come true. We pray that this holiday season will allow you to see the fulfillment of dreams in the hearts of your family. May you experience the thrill, satisfaction and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. On this sacred Christmas eve may the dreams of your heart dance tonight! I know you've heard this many times during the season, but Merry Christmas and happy new year. We dearly love you.
